A perennial problem: what to wear on a casual summer work day?

Being a freelancer I spend most of my work days in the local coffee shop, or the park, with my laptop. Although these seem at first glance to be super-casual venues there is much social nuance that lurks beneath the devil-may-care veneer of café life. Many friends, work colleagues and even potential clients live in the area. As I sit at my table, my hair screwed into a straggly bun with a chopstick stuck through it, two pairs of spectacles pushed up on my head and a spot on my chin, they are liable to pop their head in the window shouting a cheery ‘good morning’ in such a manner as to cause the forkful of scrambled egg that was poised before my open mouth to slide gently down my t-shirt.

It would not do to admit defeat and be seen tapping away on my keyboard in a suit, high heels and full slap. In any case, as the thermometer hovers near 30˚ the thought of caking my face in heavy makeup, or indeed any makeup at all, seems irksome. Summer is the time to keep things simple.

Hence I am constantly re-evaluating the bare minimum that I can get away with in make-up terms whilst still appearing effortlessly groomed. This is my current routine:  Continue reading

I recently flew long haul from Sydney to London – via Korea. I stayed overnight in a hotel in Seoul but my bags were checked all the way through to London.
