Easy Summertime Makeup

A perennial problem: what to wear on a casual summer work day?

A perennial problem: what to wear on a casual summer work day?

Being a freelancer I spend most of my work days in the local coffee shop, or the park, with my laptop. Although these seem at first glance to be super-casual venues there is much social nuance that lurks beneath the devil-may-care veneer of café life. Many friends, work colleagues and even potential clients live in the area. As I sit at my table, my hair screwed into a straggly bun with a chopstick stuck through it, two pairs of spectacles pushed up on my head and a spot on my chin, they are liable to pop their head in the window shouting a cheery ‘good morning’ in such a manner as to cause the forkful of scrambled egg that was poised before my open mouth to slide gently down my t-shirt.

It would not do to admit defeat and be seen tapping away on my keyboard in a suit, high heels and full slap. In any case, as the thermometer hovers near 30˚ the thought of caking my face in heavy makeup, or indeed any makeup at all, seems irksome. Summer is the time to keep things simple.

Hence I am constantly re-evaluating the bare minimum that I can get away with in make-up terms whilst still appearing effortlessly groomed. This is my current routine:  Continue reading

A Bewitching Night Cream

Twelve Beauty Complete Regeneration Night CreamTwelve Beauty Complete Regeneration Night Cream (50ml – £48)

Is a night cream really necessary or is it just a thicker version of a day cream? In the name of research I decided to try out Twelve Beauty Complete Regeneration Night Cream.

First impressions – the unction is presented in luxe-clinical style in a heavy glass jar with minimalist white and silver packaging. I like it. It is not heavily scented but gives off a subtly fresh aroma that reminds me of Continue reading

A One Stop Beauty Pot

Herbfarmacy-skin-rescue-balm-grainyHerbfarmacy Skin Rescue Balm (30g – £11.75 or 15g – as part of ‘Totally Balmy’ 3 x 15g balm kit £18.50)

I recently flew long haul from Sydney to London – via Korea. I stayed overnight in a hotel in Seoul but my bags were checked all the way through to London. So everything that I managed to cram into my tiny carry-on case had to work double time: long t-shirt and leggings work as pyjamas, scarf works as wrap / headrest, inflatable pillow works as footrest, iPad works as book / music / video player, and so on.

Imagine my joy at discovering a mini size pot of Herbfarmacy’s Skin Rescue Balm. This rich, thick unction works as a Continue reading

Ophelia by John Everett Millais – Tate Gallery, London

The Good Glamour guide to spas, facials, massage treatments and general fabulousness.

Some days, being a beauty blogger feels like nothing more than sitting around in saggy-bum leggings with a muesli face-pack on, hunched over my laptop, whistling into the geranium-and-rose-petal-scented wind. Other days, my cup overruns with special and gorgeous treats. Like today. I have been invited to sample Oskia’s Renaissance luxury face & body treatment. I purr the words: ‘rrrrenaisssance luuuxury face and body trrrreatment’. It cheers me up no end, I can tell you.

Product Replacement Therapy: How Can I Live Without Crème de la Mer?

Product Replacement Therapy begins…

Way back when I made my first forays into the world of Good Glamour I can tell you, I was skeptical. My experience of natural beauty products was confined to the stuff I’d sampled in the health food shops of my youth. You know, a bit greasy, lumpy, packaged in brown bottles with hand-printed labels and all smelling of patchouli or ylang-ylang. Those po’ girl potions never graced the pages of Vogue nor sparkled alluringly from the pristine shelves of ritzy department stores. ‘All very worthy’, I thought, ‘but I bet they don’t really work’.

Cult cosmetics are cult for a reason. We’ve tried them. We trust them. They make us feel divine… we can’t live without them!

Yet, now that that we know what’s really in our favourite products, the question must be asked: can we live with them? This month marks the launch of the Good Glamour Challenge. Here’s how it works:  Continue reading

A Balm For All Reasons – Neal’s Yard Wild Rose Beauty Balm

Neals Yard Remedies Wild Rose Beauty Balm - a versatile balm with nothing toxicIt horrifies me to admit that I remember when Neal’s Yard first produced their line of natural skincare. In the eighties Neal’s Yard Remedies were more than just beauty products, they were lifestyle accessories. I used the striking cobalt blue bottles to adorn my bathroom like some kind of DIY Yves Klein installation. The use of cobalt glass dates back to Victorian apothecaries – blue bottles contained medicines but also household cleaners and poisons.

They lost their way a bit in the nineties, replacing blue glass bottles with blue plastic and adding more and more product lines with ingredients of variable quality. In recent years though, Neal’s Yard Remedies has rebuilt its reputation as a leading natural, ethical mid-market brand and has gone so far as to produce some thoroughly outstanding products. Which brings me to…  Continue reading
